About Chesed Shel Emes

Winnipeg’s non-profit chevra kadisha

Chesed Shel Emes was established in 1930 as a non-profit organization with a mandate to prepare members of the Jewish community for burial according to tradition.

Each person is treated with the same consideration and respect. No one is refused service due to financial hardship.

Men and women are carefully chosen and trained as volunteer members of the chevra kadisha (holy society). Their purpose is to dutifully and lovingly prepare the dead for burial, an act of true loving-kindness.

Chesed Shel Emes is financed almost exclusively through fees embedded in the price of a funeral. When a family pays a synagogue for a funeral, $3,025 of that fee is transferred to Chesed Shel Emes to cover its immediate costs and to help underwrite its ongoing operational expenses. At all times, Chesed Shel Emes retains a reasonable operating surplus so that urgent expenses can be easily covered. The organization is fiscally responsible and expertly advised.

That said, the current need for a $3.18 million capital expenditure goes beyond the organization’s capacity, hence the capital campaign. A campaign of this magnitude is an exceptional event for Chesed Shel Emes, not likely to be repeated in the lifetime of the donor.

The Chesed Shel Emes chapel reflects a history of generosity and volunteerism. With the new south building, a new chapter will be written.

Chesed Shel Emes is embraced and respected by all denominations of Jewish life in Winnipeg, and by people who are unaffiliated, coming together to lead this community treasure. This spirit of cooperation and community drives operational excellence. What Chesed Shel Emes does is sacred, essential, and unifying.
